What makes our school age program work.
School-age care for kids ages five through twelve is the part of the daycare world parents most often describe as a holding pen — a place to park kids before and after school. We chose to build the opposite. Our school-age clubhouse is a real program, with a real schedule, taught by real teachers, with real enrichments built in.
The science here is the easy part: kids ages five to twelve need physical movement, predictable structure, autonomy in their choices, opportunities to build mastery in something they care about, and adult relationships outside their family. Boredom is the enemy, but so is over-scheduling. The trick is doing both: giving kids structured options while also leaving plenty of unprogrammed time.
Our after-school day mixes homework time (with help available, optional), dance class with Amazin Grace Dance Studio (built in, not paid extra), gymnastics with Flips Gymnastics (also built in), outdoor time on the school-age side of campus, art and STEM activities, and time to just be a kid with their friends. The Starpoint bus drops at our door, which means kids walk straight from the bus into the clubhouse — no parent shuffle, no transit. The 1:10 ratio gives our teachers room to actually know the kids by name and personality.

What a school age day actually looks like.
School-age care at Kandyland has two flavors: school-year and summer. During the school year, the morning side is before-school care for working parents — kids arrive, get breakfast on us, do a quiet activity or read until the Starpoint bus picks them up at our door.
After school, the bus drops them back, kids do a snack and a short outdoor break to burn off the school day, then settle into the structured afternoon: homework time first (optional but supervised, with help available), then a rotation through the day's enrichment. Mondays might be dance with Amazin Grace. Tuesdays gymnastics with Flips. Wednesdays a STEM project. Thursdays an art block. Fridays a longer free-play block on the playground or in the clubhouse.
Snack, more outdoor time when weather allows, and parent pickup. Snow days, vacation days, and Starpoint Superintendent's days are full-day Kandyland — same kids, same teachers, expanded schedule, sometimes a field trip if the timing fits.
Summer is its own program, ten weeks, themed weeks, weekly field trips across Niagara County.
Why Niagara County families choose our school age program.
Working parents in Lockport, Pendleton, Wheatfield, Newfane, and across the Starpoint district keep coming back to our school-age program for one reason above all others: it is not a holding pen. Their kids come home tired and happy.
The bus drop-off at our door takes the morning and afternoon panic out of the day. The dance and gymnastics being built in means parents do not have to add a second weekly drive to a separate studio. Snow days are covered, which alone is worth it for parents who otherwise burn vacation days every winter.
The 1:10 ratio is meaningful — our school-age teachers know the kids well enough to spot a friend conflict or a homework struggle and address it. And the kids themselves vote with their feet: most of our school-age kids stay with us until they age out at twelve.

What are your teacher-to-child ratios?
Infant 1:4, Toddler 1:5, Preschool 1:7, Pre-K 1:8, School Age 1:10. We meet or exceed every NY OCFS minimum, and real-world ratios are usually better.
